Congratulations your school has just been awarded the "Outstanding Technology School" for your use of technology in teaching. One of the accomplishments that earned your school this award is the use of Web 2.0 tools. Your principal has selected your technology team of teachers to share how you are using Web 2.0 at the state technology conference.
Task
Your team has decided that the best way to share your success with Web 2.0 tools at the conference is to create a wiki with some of your favorite tools and examples and explanations of how this tools can be used. You will use the wiki for presenting during the conference and it will remain on the web after the conference for the teachers who attend your session to use as they begin to use Web 2.0 tools with their students.
Process
Select Your Audience - Your team must decide the grade level of the school where you teach. This is an important decision because the tools you select will have to be useful for teachers that teach this level of students. If you want you may narrow your focus by selected a specific content area.
Big Picture - There are many web 2.0 tools being created every day. Many educators have written about how to use these tools in the classroom. You will find a set of links about Web 2.0 tools at the end of this page. Assign these to each team member. Each team member should select 3 or 4 tools that s/he thinks would be the best for the teachers at the selected grade level. Several tools are mentioned on each resource, so don't worry if you come up the the same ones.
Select the Top 6. Each team member should share the 3 or 4 tools that s/he considered the best tools. As a team you will need to select the 6 best tools to include in your wiki. It is important that the ones you select are the most useful to your selected audience. If you find more than 6 that you believe EVERY teacher should know about you make a section for honorable mention and put a link to these tools if you like.
Create a Wiki - One team member should create a wiki for your work. This should be different from your team wiki, since it will have several pages. You should put a link to this new wiki on your team wiki. On the opening page you should describe the purpose of the wiki and why you selected these tools as the best. Then create a separate page for each tool. Make sure that you set the permissions so that all team members can create and edit pages and post discussions.
Research - Assign each team member a tool to review. You can find a lot by exploring the tool, but also search for specific information outside of the tool itself on the links provided in the Resources section. Each team member should be able to describe the following things:
purpose
features
creator and sponsor
tips and techniques for using the tool
example of something or a link to something created by the tool to show that you have mastered the use of the tool.
safety concerns when using the tool
examples of how the tool can be used - these can be lesson plans or ideas that you find that you create (at least 3)
references used in preparation of the wiki
Complete the Wiki - Each team member should create a page about the tool that s/he was assigned. The page should be informative and creative and contain all the required information listed in the research section.
Review - The team should review each tool page. Develop a way to make sure that at least 2 team members review every page. Remember the information we read earlier about providing helpful feedback. Share your feedback in a "discussion" post on the tool page. Also on the home page of this wiki enter a tag describing which objective this activity meets.
In class we will have a time for each team to review the wikis created by other teams. We will also discuss what we have learned about Web 2.0 tools and Web Quests.
